New moon ritual: a simple 7-step guide to setting intentions

Every month the moon vanishes from the sky for a night or two. Astrologers call this the new moon: the start of the lunar cycle and, for many people, the best moment of the month to pause, reflect and begin again. A new moon ritual is simply a small, deliberate practice for doing exactly that.

You don’t need crystals, special tools or any astrology knowledge. This guide gives you a simple ritual you can finish in 20 to 30 minutes, with journal prompts, notes on timing and a short guide to how the zodiac sign of each new moon colours its theme.

What Is the New Moon in Astrology?

The new moon happens when the moon sits between the Earth and the Sun, in the same sign as the Sun. Its lit side faces away from us, so it is invisible. Symbolically, that makes it a blank page: the point where one cycle has ended and the next has not yet begun.

Astrologers associate the new moon with beginnings, intentions and planting seeds. Traditions differ on the ideal window, from the first few hours to the first two days after the exact moment. None of these is a rule, so choose what is practical. Our new moon and full moon dates page shows the exact times and zodiac signs.

What You Need

That is genuinely everything. Anything extra is a personal preference rather than a requirement.

A Simple New Moon Ritual in 7 Steps

  1. Choose your moment. Pick an evening within a day or two of the new moon. Put it in your calendar so it doesn’t get squeezed out.
  2. Set the space. Tidy the spot where you’ll sit, dim the lights and get comfortable. A small act of clearing up signals that something new is starting.
  3. Settle. Take five slow breaths, in through the nose for a count of four and out through the mouth for a count of six. Let the day fall away.
  4. Look back. Write a few lines about the last month: what worked, what didn’t and what you’re ready to leave behind. You’ll return to this at the full moon.
  5. Write your intentions. Choose three to five and write them in the present tense, specific and within your influence. “I walk for 20 minutes most days” works better than “I’m fit and healthy forever.” Mix areas of life such as home, work, relationships, health and creativity.
  6. Mark the moment. Read your intentions aloud. If you like, light a candle and sit quietly for a minute. Keep the page somewhere you’ll see it.
  7. Take one small action within 48 hours. Book the class, send the message, clear the drawer. An intention only starts to matter once you act on it.

Why the Sign of the New Moon Matters

Every new moon falls in a zodiac sign, and astrologers read that sign as the theme of the cycle. A simple way to use it is by element:

Check the calendar for the sign of the next new moon, and lean your intentions towards that theme. A new moon in your own moon sign is often considered especially personal. If you don’t know yours yet, use the free moon sign calculator.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

After the New Moon: Following the Cycle

About two weeks later the moon is full. That is the natural point to review how your intentions are going and to let go of what isn’t working, which is the purpose of our full moon ritual. For the bigger picture, see our guide to all eight moon phases.

A note on rituals

Moon rituals are reflective practices and astrology is offered for entertainment and personal insight. They are not a substitute for professional medical, legal, financial or mental health advice. If you use a candle, keep it in a holder away from anything flammable and never leave it unattended.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time should I do a new moon ritual?

Any time in the first day or two after the exact new moon works. Many people do it in the evening when things are quiet. The exact minute is not important, so don’t worry if you can’t match it.

How often is there a new moon?

About every 29.5 days, so there are twelve or thirteen a year. Our new moon and full moon dates page lists the exact times for the coming months.

Do I need to see the moon?

No. The new moon is not visible, because the side facing Earth is unlit. The ritual is about the pause and the fresh start, not about looking at the sky.

What if I miss the new moon?

Do it a day or two late, or at any point in the following week while the moon is waxing. A ritual is a prompt for reflection, so the timing is flexible.
